Michael White aus Australien hat seine therapeutischen Bemühungen ganz explizit in einen Foucaultschen Begründungszusammenhang gestellt – und ist dafür auch ziemlich kritisiert worden. Fred Redekop hat in einem Aufsatz im„Journal of Marital and Family“ aus dem Jahre 1995 diese Debatte skizziert und stellt sich auf die Seite Whites. „White and Epston’s (1990) use of Foucault has been characterized as ’skewed‘ and ‚dubious‘, a characterization which I have argued is unjust; White in particular has developed Foucault’s problematizing practices to a high degree in his work.
