Im November 2007 fand am Maudsley Hospital in London eine internationale Tagung zum Thema„Familientherapie des Substanzmissbrauches über die Lebensspanne“ statt, veranstaltet von der Sektion Familientherapie am dortigen Institut für Psychiatrie in Verbindung mit dem Journal of Family Therapy, das nun auch die Ergebnisse dieser Tagung publiziert hat. Altmeister in Fragen Sucht und Familie Peter Steinglass, der sich schon in den 70er Jahren mit diesem Thema beschäftigt hat, gehört mit Jenny Corless und K.A.H. Mirza zu den Gastherausgebern. In ihrem Editorial halten sie fest, dass das Thema des süchtigen Drogengebrauches nach wie vor ein marginales Thema in der Familientherapie/systemischen Therapie darstellt, obwohl es sich mittlerweile um einen ausgereiften Forschungs- und Praxisbereich handele. Neben allen offenen Fragen, die in diesem Heft auch angesprochen wird, werden als positives Ergebnis einer familienorientierten Suchtbehandlung hervorgehoben:„- the value of working therapeutically with whole families and systems rather than with the substance-misusing person alone; – a therapeutic stance that incorporates a non-blaming, collaborative approach rather than a hierarchical, confrontational style; – a recognition that clients can have multiple drug-related change goals, and while abstinence may be top of the list, reduced use and harm minimization activities can bring very worthwhile gains; – an expansion of outcome measures of success to include the psychosocial functioning of non-using family members as well as the substance misuser; – an awareness of the value of relationships, both within the family and via social networks, critical sources of support and positive reinforcement for therapeutic change; – an appreciation of the need to adapt the therapeutic approach to fit both family values and cultural beliefs of the larger community within which the family is embedded; – a sense of humility about the complexity and multi-deterministic causality of addictive behaviours along with the tenacity necessary to work constructively with families around managing chronic conditions like substance misuse disorders“
